Summary

For the last decade I've been a senior engineer and technical lead at Hughes Network Systems — architecting systems, reviewing code, and mentoring more than ten engineers, several of whom were promoted into senior roles. I was the first there to adopt agentic AI programming, and I built and ran the internal education that brought it to the rest of the team. That sits on top of decades writing production software — Ruby on Rails, Angular, React, TypeScript, Node.js, and AWS — mostly at scale inside established engineering teams.

I've been early to this before. In 1996, I built a self-learning weighted-logic system on personal hardware — years before "machine learning" was a term anyone used, while taking whatever engineering work I could find as a new immigrant. I was working with DALL·E in 2022, then ChatGPT from launch, and by April 2023 I was paying for production OpenAI API access and building with it at work — before most engineering organizations had even decided whether employees could use these tools. That same pattern carried into agentic programming: I was first at Hughes to adopt it, and I built the internal training that brought the rest of the team with me.

Alongside that, I build agentic AI systems by hand: a mesh-network security architecture for distributed embedded hardware, a SaaS app shipped end-to-end with Claude Code and Cursor, and generative-AI pipelines trained on custom models. Explaining new tools clearly, so other people can build with them, is something I've done publicly since the first wave of AI image models.

Experience

Senior Software Engineer — Hughes Network Systems
Aug 2014 – Present
Advanced network and software solutions for employee training, management systems, and consumer-facing media signage. Greater Salt Lake City Area.
  • Led full-stack development using Ruby on Rails, Angular, React, TypeScript, and Node.js, delivering enterprise web applications at scale.
  • Served as technical lead on a small engineering team — owned architecture decisions, code review, and delivery.
  • Mentored 10+ engineers over the course of the role; several promoted into senior positions.
  • Deployed and operated services on AWS using Docker and Kubernetes, including CI/CD pipelines.
  • First to adopt agentic AI programming at Hughes; built and ran the internal education around it, and serve as the go-to resource for AI-tooling questions across the team and the American Fork office.
  • Led full-stack development of a satellite realignment system UI (real-time tracking, mission-critical visualization) through a successful launch; currently building a digital-signage platform end-to-end.
Founder, Sole Developer & Creative Director — GeekatPlay Studio
2001 – Present
Digital production and engineering lab spanning AI tooling, embedded systems, and technical education. Salt Lake City, UT.
  • Sole owner and only developer — originate the ideas, build the technology, and direct the creative side end-to-end.
  • Designed and built HiveLink, a self-healing mesh-network security architecture for distributed embedded hardware, with a full federated trust and quarantine system.
  • Maintain 38 public GitHub repositories (174+ stars) covering AI tooling, ComfyUI workflows, and automation scripts.
  • Built and operate a sponsor management automation system handling 48 active deals end to end.
  • Teach software engineering and generative-AI workflows to an audience of 96,000+; contributed to two Focal Press books on 3D graphics — the project tutorial and editorial input on one, the instructional graphics on the other.
Earlier career: Senior UI Developer, Softwise · Senior Interactive Technologist, Merit Medical Systems · Senior UI Developer & Art Director, iCentris — owning both engineering and visual/art direction for client web applications — plus earlier full-stack and backend roles across financial services, healthcare, advertising, semiconductor, and gaming.

Featured Projects

Independent engineering work, built and shipped outside of day-job employment.

HiveLink / Ash-Mesh

Self-healing mesh-network security architecture
  • Self-healing mesh network for distributed embedded hardware on ESP32-class devices, LoRa, and MQTT — designed to detect and quarantine compromised nodes without human intervention.
  • Formal PRD, TRD, and Hardware BOM / Comms Trade Study documentation.
  • Quarantine state machine with 7 states (UNKNOWN, TRUSTED, SUSPECT, QUARANTINED, HONEYPOT, BLOCKED, RELEASED), tunable suspicion scoring, and recovery flows keyed to hardware root-of-trust.
  • Federated trust-list format, interop beacon format, and a decoy-data generator using canary tokens. Architecture is explicitly defensive by design — offensive/reflashing capability was deliberately declined.

EventFlow Analytics

Real-time UX analytics & friction-detection platform
  • Built a full event-tracking pipeline — client tracker snippet, Express ingestion API, and a React/Vite dashboard — capturing clicks, scroll depth, and interaction timing in real time.
  • Designed a UX Friction Overlay that visualizes hesitation and drop-off as a color-coded heatmap directly on the page, with automated diagnostics explaining each bottleneck.
  • Privacy-first by design: client-side PII filtering keeps password, email, and payment fields from ever leaving the browser.
ReactViteNode.js ExpressReal-Time Analytics

Image Express

Open-source AI-native design platform
  • An open-source design platform (imageexpress.xyz) orchestrating multiple generative image models in a single creative workspace.
  • Owned solo end-to-end — architecture, interface, and generative pipeline integration — iterating directly against real usage.
Generative AIOpen SourceDesign Tooling

TripCraft

SaaS app built end-to-end with agentic coding tools
  • A Next.js/Tailwind/Vercel SaaS application built live, end-to-end, using Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Kiro, Continue.dev, and Ollama.
  • Demonstrates production-grade output from AI-native development practices, not just prototyping.

Teaching & Community

Alongside my engineering roles, I've built a technical-education practice at Geekatplay Studio — 3,000+ tutorials and a 96,000+ audience across English and Russian YouTube channels — with training used by artists at studios including ILM, Blizzard, DreamWorks, and Ubisoft.

I was teaching prompting and workflow for the first wave of AI image models back in 2022, and I'm publishing on agentic and ComfyUI workflows now — same practice, same audience, three years apart. Explaining new tools clearly, so other people can build with them, is something I've done publicly for a long time.
